Harriet Goodrich
Harriet Goodrich (born Kaufman) grew up in an Atlantic coastal town in the United States, called Merryweather (English, meaning “by the sea”), where the primary industry was fishing. The scenic town was rather modest sized most of the year, but in the summer months there was always a large influx of vacationers, and people returning to their summer homes. Harriet’s father owned a thirty-year old dry goods business in downtown Merryweather, inheriting it from his father. As an important and longstanding businessman, Harriet’s father was among the social elite of the community. Harriet was a youngest child, with a brother, Dirk, four years older. While growing up, her mother diligently cared for them, making sure they had the best and broadest educational opportunities available. Both children studied piano well into their teenage years. Harriet also took dance lessons most of her childhood. When the children were older, Harriet’s mother became highly involved in the local women’s social clubs, including Bridge Club, and the Women’s Auxiliary of Merryweather or WAM. Her parents felt very proud to send Harriet to college, where she completed a degree in Home Economics. Harriet’s life was easy and free of want. Although having a quiet demeanor, Harriet’s good looks drew many people to want to be her friend.
